Why the garage door decides the outcome
Wind pressure on a home is manageable when the home is a closed system. Air outside pushes on the walls and roof; the interior stays at ambient pressure; the loads are what the structure was engineered for. When a garage door fails, wind rushes inside the garage. The interior pressure rises rapidly. Now the roof, the walls, and the other doors experience wind pressure on the outside AND pressure from the inside pushing outward. The load doubles or triples. Small missile (2x4 hit at 34 mph) and large missile (2x4 hit at 50 mph) tests are the two levels. HVHZ requires both. Cyclic testing. The 6 signs your garage door is inadequate
1. Original to a pre-2001 home. Building codes tightened significantly after Hurricane Andrew (1992) and again in 2001. Pre-2001 doors were not required to meet current wind ratings. 2. Single-layer steel with no reinforcement. Thin single-layer garage doors have very low wind ratings. 3. Missing or damaged struts/reinforcement bars. Horizontal reinforcement bars across the door interior are how the door resists wind. 4. Missing or damaged wind lock brackets. Look at the sides of the door where it meets the track. 5. Corrosion or damage. Salt exposure, minor collision damage, or age has weakened the door. 6. No FL product approval sticker. All Florida-code-approved doors carry an FL product number sticker. If yours doesn't have one, it's not code-compliant.
