When can wet drywall sometimes dry in place?
Drying in place may be considered when all of the following conditions are present:
The water source is known and considered clean.
The leak is stopped and the affected area is addressed promptly.
The drywall remains firm, flat and structurally intact.
Wall-cavity materials can be evaluated and are not holding hidden moisture.
Air movement and dehumidification can reach the affected assembly safely.
Moisture readings show a consistent downward trend toward an appropriate dry target.
That does not mean every clean-water loss should be left untouched. A small, accessible area of intact drywall is different from a wall with wet insulation, multiple paint layers, vinyl wallcovering, swollen baseboards or a leak that continued unnoticed.
Why the decision is about the wall system—not just the drywall face
Drywall is one layer in a larger assembly. A painted surface may feel dry while moisture remains in the gypsum core, paper facing, insulation, wood framing, trim or floor edge.

Selective removal does not mean opening every wall. The goal is to remove material that is damaged or unsafe to retain, create access where needed, and preserve unaffected finishes when the evidence supports it.
